Compute and store per-file checksums

Description

There are many cases where users want to be able to communicate and/or verify checksums for files, so it would be useful if the system computed them as a matter of course during file creation and stored them.

Note that the current per-block and per-manifest checksums don't meet this need since they aren't on a user-visible unit of data.
