Ward, the script LGTM.
I need to do some changes in salt's master (added #16925 to track those changes) before this works.
Thanks, I've merged the branch. When #16925 is done, I will update the CI jobs to use the new script. I'll keep this ticket open until then.

Now that #16925 is done, I've converted the deploy jobs (regular + wb2) for ce8i5, 9tee4 and tordo to the new salt-based deploy script.
