Not sure how else to phrase this, (I expected something to work but it didn't.)

I'd argue that regex matching should be off by default and that substring matching should be used instead. A checkbox to enable regexes for power users could be a useful feature, but they're too confusing for most users (and defeat commonly use characters like periods as a separator for file extensions).
