Bug #7010
closed[Documentation] Document API/Git server's Git 1.7.10 requirement
Description
The API server and Git server require Git 1.7.10. Add a note about this requirement:
- in the API server install guide, under "Install API server and dependencies"
- in the Git server install guide, under "Install git and other dependencies"

There was a little discussion in the office about recommending that CentOS 6 users get Git 1.7.10 a particular way. Unfortunately, I don't see a good installation channel to recommend to them. This version is not available for CentOS 6 through any repository affiliated with Red Hat (CentOS, EPEL, Software Collections). Third-party repositories like RPMForge are available, but I honestly don't know enough to say whether they're trustworthy.
We are in this same boat with a number of other third-party dependencies. You have to install MUNGE, SLURM, Gitolite, and runit all from source on CentOS 6. Git will have to be the same way. We should make this easier, but that needs more planning and is for another story.

We need git version 1.7.10 or later. If you are using an earlier version of git, please update git version. For example on Red Hat-based systems:
- Should say "Arvados requires" not "we need"
- Take out the part about
yum install
per Brett's note above, if the user is on an older distribution they won't be able to upgrade git that way.
